Yesterday was the day I decided to start potty training. Aubrey has been asking me for months if she can go potty. I keep telling her "next week." Honestly, I wasn't ready for her to potty train because it all sounded so inconvenient. It has been nice knowing that she has a diaper on at all times and I can jump in the car and go anywhere and let her do her business without issues. The idea of always having to remember to ask her if she needs to go potty and constantly feeling like I have to check her "just in case" was not appealing to me. So many friends told me that if I didn't potty train when she showed interest, then it could get a lot harder later. With that constantly running through my head, I finally decided to buckle down and just do it. It took about a month for me to find a week where we didn't have anything going on for at least 3 consecutive days. I want to make sure I am consistent and not just do a little here and there.
When she woke up yesterday I was ready to start, but I was planning on letting her wear her diaper during breakfast and start after that. Well, once I realized I had not a single diaper in the house, that moment is when I had to begin. It was such a stressful feeling knowing that at any time she could have an accident, so I decided to go outside (thanks Hayley for the idea). I took her little toilet outside and let her run without diaper or underwear. I explained that if she needed to go potty that she sit down on the toilet and go in the toilet (at this point I didn't even know if she even knew what the sensation felt like). Of course, she went to the toilet about 3 times back and forth to try it out and sit down. At one point I saw her grabbing her bottom several times, running to the toilet, sitting down then getting back up. Finally, she ran to the toilet, sat down and went #2! Her first thing in the toilet was #2!!!! I cheered for her, gave her a sticker on her sticker chart and gave her a Skittle.
Throughout the rest of the day, she went to the toilet on her own and went potty all day on her own without me having to ask her. Clearly, she understood the feeling of needing to go so I was happy about that. We survived the entire day without one pee or poo outside of the toilet except for the nap time accident in which I put her in underwear (because I had nothing else) but she definitely wasn't ready for that. She wore big girl underwear all day long and I never had to change another pair.
Overall, we had a very successful first day, but who knows what today will bring.
